'a dream of heroes' is one of my favourite user made maps. It's great for hotseat/multilayer. Each of the 7 playable towns have a unique and intersting starting area including some solid lore, the one non payable town is a massive endgame challenge and they're are so many events and things to do that you're never bored.

Town Portal is a 4th level spell in the School of Earth Magic . At a basic level, it teleports the casting hero to the nearest allied town. However, if the hero has Advanced or Expert Earth Magic, Town Portal teleports the hero to any allied town, at the players choice. The hero cannot teleport to a town which has a visiting hero.
A lot of players have a biased perception of Fortress because of this. It does not help that 2 of their creatures were severely underpowered in RoE. They have been slightly buffed in SoD though. Fortress is overall a very defensively sound town to play. In Heroes III, the principle that the best defense is a good offense holds true many a time.

Heroes 3 - The strengths of this one are many. Each town/faction has both one 'Might' and one 'Magic' hero class so Necropolis for example have Death Knights and Necromancers, Rampart have Rangers and Druids, etc. for 10 different towns (11 with the HotA expansion).
Units: A strong choice for beginners. Rampart troops are generally cheaper than other towns. They also have several useful defensive properties that new players may not not be aware of at first. However, Rampart troops are generally not as offensively strong as the offerings from other towns, and beginners may be frustrated when their armies
